Calvin was a great artist and friend. His passing is a sad loss for the world.
However, his work will live forever.
I would love to own one of his beautiful slit drums if any are available for sale.

Calvin Greer was a Gentleman! welcoming everyone into his home with open arms. And though, I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him very long, the times that I was granted one on one conversation with him, spoke volumes(talk about a wealth of information!). With a hardy laugh that carried throughout any room, Calvin greer's light will forever inspire in me to Go On! To continue my works, until there is no more work left in my body. God Bless you Brotha Calvin.........your inspiration and legacy lives on through me.

Dot & Family,
Patrick Turner shared with me this morning the
very sad news. It is my belief that Great Spirits
never die; however, they exist in a different
capacity. As I travel northbound then southbound
on Palmer and I glance at your home, I will still hear
his laughter and see his smile. He is not gone; he is
still with you. My thoughts and prayers are with
you as you transition from not being able to touch
him but allow yourselves to FEEL him... Turn him up
full throttle- that's the way he'd want it. He will
continue to make us smile. With Calvin, it was never
just a handshake but always a hug. One love.
My thoughts are with you.
Respectfully,
Trace Matabele

I did not know Calvin, but I own one of his slit drums that I bought from him probably 20 years ago at an arts/craft fair at UWM. My late husband used to play it in our international folkdance band. It now occupies its own niche in the hall next to the guest room in my house. When visitors come, my house reverberates with the sounds of their fascination with the drum, which is available for them to try out. I smile every time that happens.
I have followed the occasional newspaper articles about his art and his Brewers Hill home, clipped them out and kept them with the drum. I had contemplated going to visit the gallery but never got to it. I read those articles with pride, and have felt a sense of closeness to him because he was the maker of my wonderful drum. I want whoever receives the drum after my death to know something about its maker. Now the obituary is in that collection.
His legacy goes way beyond his family and friends, to strangers like me who have enjoyed and appreciated his accomplishments. I thought you might like to know this; hence this note from a complete stranger.

Calvin had a special way with my 'junk'. Somehow, it always turned into something valueable after he "scrapped" it for me. I thank God for that junk. It inspired his creativity and is part of Black History!
Calvin, Ashanti & Dot, keep on keeping on and we adore and admire your family.
