Doodles, Yes, the Criterion M looks like a must-have. It’s one of the all-time great horror/suspense films and certainly deserves the treatment that Criterion gives to its releases.
Ron, calm down. Sometimes you’ve just got to accept the fact that you’re not on the same page as everyone else. Right or wrong, it’s pointless to fight against it. You can’t change it.
To dwell on the plot of Avatar misses the point. This really is a case where the medium is the message. I’m not going to defend the story, the characters, the acting—when you look at them individually and objectively, they’re lacking. But the movie works. While I was watching it—and was voicing the same criticisms you made—I was in that world. Max said much the same in her review. I really think it’s something to do with the 3-D. It was tickling parts of my brain that aren’t used to the stimulation. Whatever, I liked it.

I can't believe you two. Have you turned to drugs in my absence?! I mean the wrong drugs? Avatar was imbecilic, a five year old with five hundred million dollars could've done a better job. It's disgusting that the thing even made it into theatres but GOD! GOD! GOD! it's s--t people! Soylent Green was better. Hell, watch an old copy of Star Wars (1977!!!) and remember what a good movie could actually be and - indeed - had to be to earn any box office at all!? Has everyone been brainwashed with the marketing for this drek? The story is completely inane and derivative to boot (Starship Troopers anyone?!) Even Star Trek (1967) for those of you still capable of performing simple arithmetic) didn't have guns that shot, jeez, bullet. The story was predictable and tendentious. The acting was wooden and the bad guys were all unredeemably bad and the marines talked like marines heading off to Iraq and wore the same hairdos and yeah I know it's all a hifalutin metaphor for how we're wiping out the Iraqis or maybe the way we're destroying Gaia and/or maybe killed off many Native Americans not to mention Africans and . . . Did anybody ever figure it's a metaphor for how you can't make a good movie with a piece of drek for a script?! And HURT LOCKER?! Was there an actual plot there or just a guy who got a rush from playing with high explosives? In the English Patient you at least cared about the Sappers because they didn't want to be there, they had lives and lovers and loves and were forced by circumstance to perform the highly dangerous jobs. We could relate to this guy. I can't relate to a guy who wants to do that job. He wanted to get blown up, and I wanted him to get blown up and would have cheered mightily had it happened about ten minutes into the movie. (Actually - and here's wonderful irony - it did and they blew up the wrong guy).
DISTRICT 9 should have won the AW for best script, best directing. This is humanity at its most natural, what aliense are most likely to look like that beautiful blue skinned humans with oversized eyes and delicate little fangs. You two blew it completely, and you weren't alone. D9 - best script, best acting. It was a near flawless product which of course means nothing at all at the Academy Awards.

Have you had a chance to see The Criterion Collection's release of Fritz Lang's "M" (1931)? I'm thinking it's a "must own" on Blu-ray.
