Max, I am so thankful that you and I have the same taste in movies....you have a wonderful list that represents beautifully just how good 2007 was for film in general. Before I give MY Top Ten, can someone tell me what the SAGS are thinking? They nominate Hairspray and Into The Wild over Atonement and Sweeney Todd? I'm beginning to fear for the Academy's picks now...hopefully they'll live up to the good choices that the Globes made (I never thought I would say that!)
Jordan's Top Ten Films of 2007
10. Eastern Promises--Viggo Mortensen is the most underrated actor working...will the Academy snub him of a well-deserved nod?
9. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead--Sidney Lumet once again proves he's a legend...at 83, no less, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman proves why he is the best actor of the year overall, with 3 great performances.
8. Away From Her--Julie Christie is a shoe-in for Best Actress, and Sarah Polley is on her way to great stuff.
7. American Gangster--Denzel, Russell, and Ridley give us the mob picture of our generation.
6. The Savages--Thank God for anti-sentimentality and Tamara Jenkins's poignant look at brother/sister rivalries. Great stuff from Hoffman, Laura Linney, and Philip Bosco.
5. Sweeney Todd--Unlike Max, I actually like Depp's singing...Burton is masterful at this sort of work, and the Academy will honor him with multiple nods for his attention to detail.
4. Ratatouille--All I can say is, pure bliss. As complete and satisfying of a film that has ever been made. And can you believe that Peter O'Toole was getting Oscar buzz for his marvelous voiceover? Just brilliant!
3. No Country For Old Men--Though I suppose Hoffman should win for "Charlie Wilson's War," Javier Bardem will win the Oscar for best supporting actor because of his great hair, and he kills people, too. The Coen Bros. are a filmgoer’s delight, giving us a nearly flawless film with a wonderfully paced story and script.
2. Juno--The best collaboration by a cast all year...each performance is beautifully written and performed, particularly Ellen Page's Juno and Allison Janney as her mom. Also, I believe that it had one of the best movie moments of the year (Jennifer Gardner’s character seeing Juno at the mall....I'll stop there)
1. Atonement--The most beautiful film in a decade, masterfully directed by the great Joe Wright, with stunning work from Keira Knightley, Romola Garai, James McAvoy, Vanessa Redgrave, and company. I have never been so breathless in a theater before than I was when Wright gave us that heartbreaking tracking shot of Dunkirk....you must see it to believe it.
Runners-Up: Breach, Knocked Up, 3:10 To Yuma, There Will Be Blood, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, The Kite Runner, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, Once
I'd love to hear your comments and what you thought were the best films this year!

Just to clarify, the creatures in I Am Legend are mutated humans with characteristics of both zombies and vampires. If there were separate types present it would probably take two Will Smith's to fight them off. As for 30 Days of Night, I didn't see it. I don't usually go for horror flicks...

Bill,
I wondered if "I Am Legend" was worth a look--vampires AND zombies? It sounds good to me! It looked so much like yet another remake of a classic movie these days that I get tired of being pulled in by all the hype, although I don't know if you can consider, "Omega Man" a classic? It was a good movie.
BTW, what did you think of "30 Days of Night"? Any good?
Thanks.
Meg

I can't believe how well I Am Legend did in it's opening weekend ($77 million!). Granted that Will Smith is a megastar, but this IS a zombie/vampire flick. Don't get me wrong because I was one of the many people who saw it and actually thought it was solid, but I think this is a great example of what star power means. I would compare it to 30 Days of Night, which had Josh Hartnett and opened with $15 mil. Hartnett is at least a known actor, but the similar theme didn't pick up that great, while Smith's made 5 times as much.
