I am a Lumbee through my mother's lineage, Louisiana Revels Lee, originally from Pembroke, NC. Dad is an Irish Appalachian from western Maryland. Many thanks to Lori Piestewa, her children, and her family for the ultimate sacrifice she made and they must now endure on behalf of the freedoms I and my family and all of America as well cherish. I am very proud of her for honoring her first and second nations by serving in the military. My uncle, Sampson Revels, Pembroke, NC, fondly called "Indian Boy" by his comrades in WWII, deceased four years, was buried at 87 years with military honors (Purple Heart and other medals for surviving wounds to the abdomen while charging up a hill in the South Pacific theatre). He no doubt and his father, James Revels, were among the many American Indians to greet her and welcome her home to paradise. After becoming a Christian late in life, my grandfather James had heart failure and was rushed to the hospital. When he returned to his earthly presence after a near death experience he told his family that he had glimpsed heaven. He told his wife and children it was more beautiful than description, that gold and jewels were plentiful. I regret and am deeply saddened that this fair Hopi maid spilt her blood for me, and my country. I too am Christian and believe there is no greater love than to give your life for others. This female warrior rests in the Great Spirit's loving arms, the Creator who made her, for all eternity. May we too win this destinction when we pass to the other side. Personally, I look forward to meeting her one day. God bless her family and tribe. God bless America.
