Wastehtsili (Good Morning), I am from the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin. I send to you from my children and I our condolences to you and your family. Within our culture we talk about a time when 10 days have passed to put out a feast plate for our loved one who has gone on to the spirit world. Before all others eat at this feast special words are given to the family. I would like to extend these words to the children of Lori, her parents and all other relatives and friends. It is said that we are to take the purest of a white eagle plume and stroke the ears of the family. This is to take away an obstruction in their ears. Many times we are not able to hear the good words and sounds around us when we are grieving. This eagle plume is used to help those that are still here to be able to hear the good words that friends and other family members have to share with the family. It is also so that they can begin to hear the songs of the birds that bring about the morning. Secondly, we give the family and friends a drink of water. Many times those that are heavy with grief have a hard time speaking. This water is to cleanse their throat so that they again must be able to share their good feelings for each other and to some day sing again. The last thing is we use the purest of white deer hide to wipe the tears of the family. Many times we cannot see because our eyes are heavy with grief. We wipe their eyes so they can once again begin to see the beauty of creation around them. I send these words especially to the children and the grandparents. They have a big responsibility to take care of their grand children. I raise my children on my own as well and know that it can be lonely, hard, and trying at times. I send my encouragement, love and support to the grandparents for all the gifts they will receive by raising their grandchildren. My children as well send their encouragement, love and support. May all of Creation move close to your family and carry you through this hard time. Sk^na (Peace) Tsyosha?aht (She Give Everything) Caterina Delgado-McLester Wolf Clan Faithkeeper of the Oneida Nation, Single Mother of 3.
