I criedf when I heard the news on that sad day; I cried when I saw this tribute; I was truely touched. This soldier will always be remembered by me; a very pretty soldier and mom; a standout to the HOPI indians and to the greatest nation on earth: America the beautiful.
She did not die in vain; gone but not forgotten.

Dear Mrs. Piestewa and Family,
I'm a member of the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma. The death of Lori has profoundly affected all of Indian Country. We grieve with you. Lori was a beautiful girl and a "War Woman" in the strongest Indian tradition.
Annually, I do an Indian historical calendar. The theme for 2003 was Indian veterans and what Indians have given and continue to give to this nation.
I dedicated it to all Native American veterans and to two fine Indian men, one a Cheyenne River Sioux; the other, Assiniboine Sioux, who are no longer with us.
I'm re-issuing the calendar in memory of Lori. It would be my honor and privilege to send you a calendar as a
remembrance.
I did not want to presume to send you a calendar without having first made a proper introduction and offering the condolences of myself and my family.
When I think of Lori, I recall Tuba and Moencopi fondly. I was the Indian probate judge for the Indian land allotments with the department of Interior for 20 years. My jurisdiction included the Hopi Reservation. We always stayed in Tuba when we came up for hearings. I loved the early morning landscape. There is no doubt that your daughter's spirit is present in that majesty.
Sincerely,
Judge Sally Willett
