Dear Leigh Ann,
It is the end of August now and still the VA continues to deny my hepatitis C claim for compensation as service connected even though the San Francisco compensation examiner in January stated that it is more likely than not that the Veteran received the hepatitis C while in the service of his country. Last month I had a very serious emergancy where I had to go to a regular civilian doctor because the VA clinic I have been using for many years accidentially over dosed me on my thyroid medication by four times the recomended dosage. As I was brushing my teeth they all of the sudden started to break off inside my mouth, literally desolving as I brushed. I attribute my hypothyroidism and my undifferentiated Spondyloarthropathy to my chronic hepatitis C. I was very fortunate to have found a physician who acted immediately giving me antibiotics for the absessing and getting me back to the normal dosage of thyroid medication. She also contacted the Dentist asking him to take me as an emergancy patient because of what the overdose had done to my teeth. He will be removing all my teeth on the 12th of Sept. As I was being examined by the physician she noticed severe pitting edema from about liver level all the way down to the bottom of my right leg, I was put on diaretics to start the process of draining the fluid from my body to reduce the swelling and within a week I was able to wear shoes once again. I took her in all my VA medical records, service records and all treatment records covering the past 34 years from the time of my service to my country while I was in the U S Navy. She took several weeks to review the intire medical files and came to her personal opinion which was the hepatitis C was contracted by air gun innoculation in basic training camp in San Diego in 1971. She wrote several pages on the subject and also had the supervising physicain of the Medical Center review and sign the document which was sent to the VARO in Oakland. I am presently waiting to see if the VARO will change its decision about the connection of Chronic Hepatitis C as being compensatable due to service connection. When is enough evidence enough? How much more proof does the VA need before they finally grant benefits and accept the fact that the hepatitis C virus was the result of the air gun injections? I understand because of your site that many more Veterans have put in claims for hepatitis C due to the air gun immunizations we all received during the Vietnam War Era. Keep up the fine work, you have touched thousands of lives and will continue to touch thousands more with your sincere efforts. Thank you for careing.
Sincerely, Scott Rose

I have looking through out the www trying to get a grasp of the Dragon ever since the telephone call diagnosing me with HepC. Your site is just wonderful and informable...I think the worst of it is the fatigue and lack of concentration and confusion (thought it was just from years of partying)...
Thank you

I just wanted to bring everyone's attention to another article which just came out yesterday May 5,2005 in The Humboldt Beacon-county's news weekly. LeighAnn, this is another one on Veteran with Chronic Hepatitis C fighting for his benefits to compensation for contacting the disease while serving his country honoralby. Even though VA physician Dr. Philip Wagner and the examiner for comp and pension in San Francisco have documented that the hepatitis C is more likely than not (that's VA code for Service Connected) the Veteran is still getting denied benefits. Thousands of Veterans who were in during the Vietnam Era are positive Hep C and now in end stage liver disease and the government still will not except the fact that the disease was related to their time serving honorably in the war. It is a shame that the VA doesn't help all these suffering veterans. Keep up the fine site, it is helping alot of Vets out there along with all the other victims of this epademic that seems to be world wide. When will they listen, when will they learn? Sincerely, Scott Rose
