I own one of your saddles that was probably made in the 40's. It has a large horn cap that reads JEAN. The mark on the fender underskirt is Y 25. I would love to hear from you and get some data on this saddle. It is hand tooled with a flower pattern, is round skirted and I believe a semi-quaterhorse tree (as my horse outgrew it). Thanks so much - I stumbled upon your website by chance as I was looking up some rodeo info. I had tried the Rowell Saddle Co. and many other attempts at J H Rowell but came up empty handed. Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks in advance, Sharon Haynesworth 1856 Crandall Dr. San Diego, Ca. 92111

Born in Hayward in 1935...Remember well the Rodeo parades, the Rodeo at the Rowell Ranch.....spent much of my youth there. Even had dinner at the old Rowell house once...we were young boys and tended the horses of the Alameda County Sheriff mounted group. Those were happy days. Was a member of the Hayward High School FFA group...did lots of work on ranches around the Rowell Ranch. Had lots of friends in Cull and Crow canyons, This page does bring back old memories. Saw a lot of great cowboys here, Many who went on to the big time.

I sure would like to know more about the Rowell family. I had an uncle who lived in California. His name was Audley Rowell. My fathers name was Loyal Rowell. I know my ancestors came from England.

My husband and I lived on the Rowell Ranch for 2 years while we were in the USAF stationed at Parks AFB in Dublin. Maggie and Harry treated us like family and were very generous in allowing us to rent the small house on the ranch in back of the main house. I was allowed to use the main house basement for drying diapers and baby clothes after our baby was born when the weather was damp. The view from their living room window looking toward Dublin from Mr. Rowell's chair was spectacular. Easter of 1952 a plane crashed in the mountain area across from the ranch and the Rowells went in by horseback to help. When my Mother came out from Texas to visit, Maggie took her into Oakland to Jack London's for lunch. I think Harriet was just a teenager or maybe younger. The ranch basement had a walk in freezer where the R's stored game they brought back from hunting trips and Mr. Rowell used to send some to his family in I think it was England. I remember, too, the parties they had after the yearly rodeo and meeting Monte Montana there . We received Christmas cards from them every year up untio the time Mr. Rowell died. They were truly wonderful people and more patrons than landlords to a newly married couple away from family. bio
