Petra and I spent Christmas and New Years in Ponce. We went to the Ft. Allen and you just want to cry. The NGard has it and it looks like they just don't care about it. Not like we all did and do. You just want to kick someone right in the A--. We took pictures any one who would like some e- mail me.

I was stationed in Fort Allen from Nov 1969 until Apr 1974 along with Jack Heffner, Mark O'Leary, Steve Hischmiller, Art Musick, Keith Bender, Chief 'Joe' Vaccaro and so many more and was converting home movies to DVD's when I took a chance to see if there was even any mention of the fort on here and I am glad I did. Please feel free to contact me at the E mail site, would love to compare notes and stories

My tickets are bought and we are headed back to Puerto Rico for a 7 day vacation. We have scheduled a snorkeling trip, a trip to El Yunque (which I have never been too, but went instead to El Toro Negro), one to Bacardi, and plan on taking a one day trip to Ponce (with a stop at FT Allen) and return to San Juan via the East coast, driving by Aguadilla (where I lived for 9 months after I was discharged from the Navy) on the way back to the city. I would like to thank Dave Davies, Rick Ewen, Don Evens, and all who have been sharing the times they spent on Fort Allen to push me to go again. I has been 30 years since I moved and 21 years since the last time I have been there. I just hope the base isn’t in that bad of shape, especially the ball field.

Was a dependent at FT. Allen when transfered from Army to Navy. My father, also Paul Albert, Col Signal Corps was the C.O. of the base. He was also the C.O. of Henry Barracks up in the mountains when it was closed down and Ft. Allen was brought on-line. Was in 8th & 9th grade. The C.O.s residence had a few placques and I still have one from when it was Loosey Field. Great memories. Was enlisted in USN 1971 serving as Corpsman then AOCS and NFO. Retired as LCDR.

Just a quick update on my recent trip back to Ft Allen. First a "Thank you!" to Bob Prewitt for answering my emails. The internet is a great thing for stuff like this. When we arrived at the gate I thought things really looked different from what I remembered as a grade schooler. The woman in the guardshack listened to me as I explained how I lived there over 30 years ago. She was all smiles and when I asked if it was possible to go on post for a look around she just waved me through. She wasn't even going to ask to see my my driver's license until I offered it to her. Even then, she just glanced at it and continued to wave me through. Because the gate location has changed I was really confused and lost for a while. I just kept driving around until I found something I recognized. Things I remember from childhood are still pretty much the same. Everything seems much smaller than it did then. While we looking around we did get some stares from some of the National Guard folks on the base, but nobody gave us any problems or questioned why we were there. I had forgotten that you can see the mountains to the north from the base. Tried to find an old restaraunt called "La Cabana del Tio Tom" and it wasn't easy because route 10 has been modernized and straightened. We eventually did find the location on PR 123, but it is no longer the same business and it was closed on a Friday night. Must be seasonal only now, or out for good. My wife and daughter really enjoyed the trip and PR is just as pretty as the boy inside me remembered it.
