I'm so happy to be on Bill's mailing list, I look forward to his year-end short story as much as Christmas! His reminiscences of growing up in Culver City really speak to me, since I lived in Santa Monica/Venice area for 12 years and attended UCLA. I call So Cal home, too, and Bill's stories take me back.. I discovered Bill through Ebay. Seven years ago, my husband and I built a music studio with tiki decor and a 20 ft. cathedral ceiling which needed an extra large tikified chandelier. I searched Ebay for an "extra large funky light" and up popped Bill's listing of a fantastic fixture he'd been commissioned to make in the 70's for a couple. The husband loved it, the wife hated it, so it hung in his studio ever since, until he listed it on the auction site and I had the good fortune to find it. We followed the bidding, there weren't any, so I emailed Bill and asked him what he wanted for it. That's when he told me the backstory and that he'd sell it for some incredibly low price which of course we couldn't refuse. It is a gorgeous giant oval made of wood with crazy shaped cutouts covered with different color plastic film. The outer edge of the 10" deep fixture is lined with pieces of wood Bill collected along the LA train tracks. And it weighs a ton. The 12 ft. tow chain it hangs from certainly adds to the weight, and the only shipper we could find who would handle such a big, heavy piece was Greyhound Bus. The shipping was way more than the piece itself! It was a special day when I drove to the bus terminal in White Plains, NY and picked up a Bill Czappa original. Its imposing presence lauds over the music studio and is a real attention stealer. So, that's my connection to Mr. Czappa, a one-of- a-kind National Treasure.
