My grandfather, Isidore Julius Silverman, AKA Jack Silverman, was a member of the AOFB in the 1920's-40's, in Hackney where he lived or Victoria Station, London or Houndsditch in the City of London where he worked. That's all I know, which my mother told me. He was also a Freemason and on the board of Governors of the Jewish Hospital in Stepney. As a prodigious beer drinker, the AOFB probably provided him with a way to indulge his love of beer and public house atmosphere and friendship at the same time as his charitable works. My mother and grandmother only knew about his 'drinking pals'. It's only recently I've found out that the 'Order of Froth Blowers' was a proper, well-known charitable as well as drinking organisation. Anybody know the name? Ilona Jesnick.

I've been collecting souvenir and commemorative handkerchiefs for about 50 years and was sent an AOFB one about 15 years ago. With it came an obit from the Daily Telegraph of 19.11.79 re the death of Albert Powell, for many years the Keith Prowse manager at the Carlton Hotel, Haymarket. Apparently he was a member of the AOFB and one of its finest recruiters. Since then I've managed to find both a membership book and a pair of the AOFB cufflinks but am always hopeful of acquiring a pennant, tankard or badge. Should be delighted to hear from anyone who with a spare! I give talks about my handkerchiefs and people are always fascinated to hear about this charity. Great to find this site on the internet. Glad to hear from any other contributors to the site. mathews_brenda @hotmail.com
