My beautiful 19 year old son, James, completed suicide in September 2000. The Health System dismissed my pleas to assist my son after his second attempt in 9 days, they discharged James following surgery to his hand after he slit his wrist. My pleas as a mother fell on deaf ears, I was told I had to go through the private health system if I wanted help. Four days later, James went rabbit shooting with friends, the gun was left in a wardrobe - next day he got the gun, walked home and shot himself in the head, I found him. OUR GRIEF IS IMMEASURABLE. I WANT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM BECAUSE THE SYSTEM LET US ALL DOWN. Another young Australian who is no more.

In December 2000, my nephew took his own life. Part of my life went with him. He was 20.

I am glad to see that there is an internet site available for people dealing with mental illness and suicide. I have a couple of friends with mental illness one being treated one not. The one who is not i am trying to get access to treatment. I know how hard it is to support people going through this termoil. I am a writer compiling a book which will raise serious questions about the care and intervention given to people in crisis. I have held public forums on this subject throughout my region and I am working towards bringing about change in a better effort to save lives if anyone wishes to contact me please feel free. People need to know that suicide is at levels so high that the myth of the lucky country is a total farce. With the right positive action we can give our hurting the attention they deserve. Thank you for your amazing strength.
