Hiya Mike, Seasons Greeting from the South. Doesn't time fly.. My young dog, Skivvy, (D.o.b 12/12/08) is just over a year old now and is looking fab. Solid in build and keen as mustard. As a pup, as they all are, he was a bugger!! Chewed the cable to: My wifes lap top, her Sat Nav. All my power tools, I could go on.... Now and again he'd sneak up on my White Racing Pigeons and run around the garden with one in his mouth. He thought that was great fun but the pigeons didn't. He always retrieved them alive even if minus many feathers. He enjoys playing Hide 'n' Seek with the ferrets and is happy to accept them as pals. I have only just started to lamp him lightly which although he's not caught one yet he seemed to learn a little more with each run. I don't want to over match him which may enduce barking during a course, so kept things short. He has caught the odd myxied rabbit whilst out mouching with the other dogs during daytime which all adds to his knowledge and experience. Last sunday I went ferreting on my own, armed with only 5 pugs, a bag of nets and Skivvy. Had the dog not been with me I would not have caught as many. He developed a knack of pinning the rabbit when they hit the net. A little too excitedly at first but after a couple of stern words from me mixed with praise, soon settled to the task well. A couple of holes over looked by me was made good use of by a couple of bunnies. He gave chase but they got to another bury... only just!! These losses only made him more determined. Light was fading fast. I'd lost a total of 4 but had 9 rabbits for my half days outing with a young team of dog and pugs and I was well pleased. However, the best was yet to come. With the wind trying to cut me in half, I said to myself, when the pugs show again I'll pick them up together with the nets and make my way home. Just then, a rabbit hits a net and Skivvy is over there in a flash. just as he's about to make a grab, it manages to get through the net (bloody 2 1/2" mesh) and bolted Hell for Leather. Skivvy changed down two cogs and was in hot pursuit.. Although a short course of no more than 80/100 yards it appeared in slow motion. I can remember each jink it made trying to evade the dog. I can't begin to describe the absolute pleasure it gave me to witness him picking up that bunny, arranging it in his mouth and him bringing it back wagging his tail. He had added number 10 to the bag. All thoughts to the carnage he'd done to my tools etc during the year faded away to obscurity. Well I did promise to write and let you know how he's progressing and I have to say, I'm well pleased. I'm not keen to show him a Charlie until next season. I want him to get a load of rabbits under his belt first, so watch this space. Kind regards and All the Best for you and your lot for 2010. Carlos :)
