Hey Brother
Some Managers have no clue how their management style effects the work place.
Why they let some get away with things and others can't.
Management has no skills, they should go to school to learn how to be fair to everyone.
Management loves conflict because they think it helps get things done.
When it gets to a point where there is no where to turn and there is a brick wall this is a sign to "walk away". There is always something better, it might take awhile to find it.
As for your former associate I have no doubt he is one of those that has 'no clue'. The cycle continues.
I could go on about the 27 years of experience I have regarding the companies I have worked for although I have to admit at the beginning of my career when we actually had "Management"
there was never the problems that there are today.
We are not perfect and we have to learn from the negativity...

To my "former working associate",
Wow, I read your post today, nearly a year after it was written. I have to admit and acknowledge you cite many points where I can concur.
Hard working...Yes!
Hard Headed....Yes!
Focused........Yes!
Flexible....... No!
Alienated.......No!
Let me point out one instance (one of many) that can lead to individualism;
There was a time, while I was on vacation, that I was getting so many calls my wife told me to go back to work! And why? Because a certain salesman known as "Higgins" couldn't figure out how to create a formual to set contractual pricing levels in Excel! But let me tell you, he had the coolest graphics and best jokes I'd ever seen on his laptop!
I'll close with this, If management was as astute as you seem to be (with regard to my career), why would I continue to have very positive reviews, above average salary increases and handsome bonus checks? I cannot recall one time when my manager sat me down and said, "Jeff, you're thinking way too far ahead of the rest of us." or, "Jeff, your negativity is adversely affecting the groups performance.". Perhaps you refer to a time when a peer asked me why I wasn't padding my bonus program to insure a multiplier!
I'm off the board now, so spread the word. If people seek my advice, they'll have to come here, to my turf.

Thank you for your provocative insight to my career at Anixter.
If you should see Billy, please tell him to stop calling. I shall never go back...never.
