Tomorrow is April First, April Fools Day, fifty years to the day that I was discharged from the USAF at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. It was also a Thursday and I was apprehensive about my discharge being on April Fools Day, I just knew that they would say “April Fool, you have four more years to go!” After signing all the papers, getting my discharge firmly in my hand, I stood back and told them what I thought was going to happen. They were very amused and said that they had two more guys coming in for their papers. I know that made their day. As we drove off, my late wife, Pauline asked if I missed the Air Force and I said no, I didn't. They had said if I re-enlisted, I would be promoted and get a year stationed at Thule, Greenland, I believe. With three children and a wife, I didn't want to be separated from them at all. I was stationed at Wethersfield AFB near Braintree, re-enlisted and extended my tour. Then our beloved president cut our station allowance and our landlord at 86 Rayne Road (no longer there) raised our rent by the same amount of the cut. Though influence of friends at headquarters, I cut my extension off and at the same time they were cutting the time to get prepared to leave down to three days and I worked that into thirty days off. My mother in law came from Ireland to bid us good-bye and when she found out about the landlord's decision, she went to see his lawyer who told her that because she was leaving, there was nothing she could do. She emphasized that she was not leaving and eventually collected the overcharge and the fine that the county imposed on the landlord which I told her to keep. I do miss the comradeship that I experienced while in the Air Force. I had a good friend at Davis-Monthan that was once a tail gunner in a bomber that was shot down and he was the only survivor. His only injury was a lost finger. While he and I were having a beer in a bar in Tucson, some woman kept making gestures at us and he said “Watch me take care of her.” He put the stump of his finger to his nose, wiggled his hand around and then acted like he stuck it in his mouth. The woman turned a beautiful shade of green and left the bar. Clutch Cleary was a character to say the least and a very good friend. Yes, I miss the Air Force and my many, many friends that I had made during my years, some I hear from yet.
