My father (MSGT Hugh D Pell) was stationed at RFAW from October 1955-July 1958. He was assigned to 77th FBS in the maintenance group. Believe he was hangar chief for part of that time. This is a great site! The internet is such a great tool for bridging time.

Stationed at Wethersfield from 1956-59 with 55th FBS/20th PMS as a hangar mechanic on the F-84F/F-100. Returned again 1962-66 with 20th CAMRON/55th TFS as a crew chief on F-100's. Crewed F-100F 56-3898 and F-100D 55-3692. Am in touch with several other mechanics from the first tour, and would welcome hearing from anyone from both tours. Went back in '93 for a visit, found the base under the British War Ministry and not available for a tour. Still looked darned good!!

This is a great site and has brought back a lot of memories of the "good old days" at Wethersfield and all the great people I met, both US and UK and I would like to thank my sister-in-law in Essex for putting me on to it. I was stationed there from 1957-1960 and worked in the Parachute Shop. Would like to hear from any of the guys who were there with me - Sgts Bell, Shea, Hall & Darnnet and Airmen, Kelly, Green & Tony Cardinas (from Pittsburgh, PA)Used to go TDY to Wheeler AFB in Libya and stayed in Tiger Town with all the other TDY's from Europe. Also went TDY to Casablanca and went to the 21 Club in town and had a ball!!!! I also played football for Wethersfield for 2yrs under Coach Doc Blanchard so would like to hear from any of those guys too. We went to Berlin to play the Berlin Bears, an Army team and they killed us, but dont remember the score. After the game we all went into town with the Bears team and had a good old time!!! In 1958 a Lt R. Hornes had to bail-out of his plane with my chute and I still have the plaque on my wall. I met my wife-to-be getting off a double decker bus in Braintree and we've now been married for 42yrs. We've been back several times and I visited Wethersfield twice. In 1969 we were able to go bowling on the base - it had changed a lot but still brought back lots of good memories.
Hope to hear from some of the old buddies. CHEERS TO YOU ALL.

I was stationed at RAFW from Apr 57 to Aug 61. Married a beautiful English girl from St Helens in Shalford in May 58 and lived in Finchingfield " The Old Mill Cottage" in front of the Windmill. This was one of my best assignments in the AF. Was in the 20th Supply Sqdn, worked in Stock Control and also tended Bar in the Airmans and NCO clubs. We have been married for 42 1/2 years and have one daughter who was born in the Chelmsford in November 1959. I left the Air Force in June 1967 and transfered to the Army as A WO-1 and retired in 1983 as a CW-4. We have been back to England in the twice in the last 4 yrs, but only up in the Northwest where my wife's home is. Hope to hear from anyone stationed with me. God Bless

I am an established aviation writer currently embarking on my twelfth published title; a study of the F-100 Super Sabre and its service history. I would be delighted to make contact with anyone who flew or maintained the Hun, either at Wethersfield or elsewhere.
sincerely,
