My grandparents (mother's side of the family) were from Marienburg. I also had a great uncle and aunt whose last name was Diehl. My grandfather changed the spelling of their last name from Schmalz to Schmaltz. The US Postal Service kept delivering mail for one of his cousins to their address. I believe, but can not confirm, that his name was Tony (Anthony?) Schmalz.
*** Obituary that appeared in the Delta County Independent for my grandmother (1983) ***
Margaret Schmaltz of Delta died Friday, May 13, 1983, at Delta County
Memorial Hospital. She was 90.
She was born Margaret Mildenberger in Marienburg, Russia, on May 7, 1893,
and moved to the United States in 1911. She moved to Delta in 1919 from
Pueblo.
Mrs Schmaltz married Adam F. Schmaltz in Denver on June 11, 1913. He does
not survive.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church of Delta and the local
Rosary Society.
Survivors include two sons, Adam and James R, both of Delta; nine
daughters, Betty Downing of Delta, Anna McElroy of Grand Junction, Marie
Wigner of Pueblo, Barbara Underhill of Austin, Eleanor Timbrook of
California, Beata Anders or Uravan, Bertha Thompsoon of Bagdad, Ariz.,
Kay Durbin of Kent Wash., and Patty Chick of Wyoming; 57 grandchildren;
73 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
A number of my grandmothers children have passed away since her death. There were 17 children born and 15 lived to become adults.
I am one of the 57 grand children.
That number may have increased after her death, but I can not keep track of all the births in this family.
Anyone think they are related?
