I'm trying again to find someone from the 601 Tactical Control Sqdn. in the late 40s. I was in the 601st from June 1946 - Nov. '48.
Recently, on Nov. 14 I heard the Candy Bomber, Oncle Wiggly Wings, the Schokoladen fleiger, the Schokoladen Soldaten, and other names for Col. Gail Halvorsen who spoke at Northern Kentucky Univ. In his talk about the Berlin Airlift and his 140 or so flights he mentioned ground control sites in the American Zone zone and at Tempelhof air field. I approached him and asked "Does the name Gunpost ring a bell?" He clapped his hand to his head and said you guys saved a lot of us. He referred to Gunpost crews guiding airlift planes away from the corridor border where Soviet YAK fighters were patroling. A great and gratifying evening.
By the way when I was with the 601st it was TCS, not ACW as the histories on this site have it.

I was stationed at Prum during my 1st duty assignment from Jan 84-Jan 86. I was a ops guy writing on the board backwards and an Airspace Management Coordinator. Loved the adventure. Thought I was in the Army instead of the Air Force!

I arrived at the 615th 11/55 until spring 56, was reassigned to 601st until summer '57 then to Wunstorf. While at Rothwesten I was put in charge of the mess hall. My NCOIC was Msgt Gier (sp?)and one of the cooks was Ssgt "Fireball" Small. Also while at Wunstorf the supply sgt was Sgt Herran (sp?). If anybody remembers these guys, and knows what happened to them, I would like to hear.

I was stationed at the Kuppe from Feb '60
to March '62. Remember two very cold
winters, but the beer and schnaps(sp) at
the club kept us warm.

Looks like I'm the only guy that served at the special assignment with aircraft control centers at Frankfurt: 1969-72 - Stationed with Det 2, 615 ACW - Air Movements & ID Section (AMIS), Frankfurt & Rhein Control Centers, Frankfurt International Airport. Little known laison unit had a major coordination job keeping track of anything that went east... i.e. West Berlin, etc.
1979-83: Det 1, 615 ACW, Kindsbach Cave. Closed the unit as last site chief.
