My Dad was XO in 1957. We were stationed at Prum until we relocated to Ulm in 1960. I remember finding WWII shells in the woods and in the valley. We used to sled in the valley and have cowpie fights! I remember some of the pilots out of Bitburg would buzz the housing area and the farmer would get mad because his hens wouldn't lay and his cows stressed out.
I remember whenever someone would find a bomb or handgrenade, the "bomb crew" from Spangdahlem AFB would come out to retrieve it. This would consist of some AP's in a jeep with some sand bags. I remember the herds of deer that would thunder past the school. I often wonder how it was for my Dad, being in Germany, after he had spent the last 17 1/2 months of the war at Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany. He never spoke of it. But being in Germany was fun and it was a magnificent country.
