My daughter was born at 26 weeks in 1998 weighing 700 grams. Her stay in the NICU was 87 days of toture (for me). She is now 6 1/2 years old, with the typical Preemie problems such as constipation, delayed speech, decreased muscle tone in her hand and fingers, and most recently possible ADHD.
I had heard about ADHD as a result of prematurity, but thought to myself, NO WAY!! Well, here we are now, dealing with some major behavioral problems, violence and extremely low tolerance to noise and light. The low tolerance to noise and light affect her moods, as a result I have a 6 year old who has some major mood swings, almost like she has PMS.
FOr the last 6 1/2 years, life ahs been good, I thank God every day that she is in my life. I feel like and ungrateful mom saying this, but for once, I would love to have a normal day and not have to walk on eggshells when I am dealing with her. Even walking on eggshells doesn't guarnetee not having a major melt down!! I don't know how many times I have had to leave restrurants and grocery stores because she has a melt down, sometimes just over a change in mind over what she wants to drink with dinner or what kind of cereal she wants!
I am so tired of hearing from people telling me taht she'll outgrow it, or that she is just spoiled, I have to be firmer with her. No one quite understands these things, of course everyone has to give you their opinions on what to do, but their opinion comes from having non-premature children, without developemental delays, or any of the other medical difficulties related to prematurity. OK enough, I really want to know if there is anyone out there who is dealing with a preemie who is now school age with the same type of issues, and has a little advice to give me.
I NEED HELP!!!! Thanks!
Laurie

My daughter Julia was born at 23 weeks gestation, weighing only 1 lb 2 oz. She was considered extreme premature. In the beginning it seemed that she wasn't going to make it but God blessed her. She had to to have about 4 blood transfusions and she had several apnea spells, but overall she was quite healthy. All of her ultrsound exams turned out to be normal. She was on oxygen and the breathing machines back and forth for over a month. However after 99 days in the hospital Julia was ready to come home with no assistance from monitors or medicines. To God be the Glory. Today she is a beautiful 8 years old girl that loves to share what God has done for her. she is a 3rd grade honor student that loves ballet and learning to play the piano. Today I'm expecting my 2nd child and the doctors are being extremely careful and I'm on bedrest as well as medication to prevent me from going into preterm labor with this baby. So far so good, I'm 28 weeks now and even though I have contractions I'm still pregnant. I'm elated to share our story on your web page and if anyone would like to contact us, please feel free. I think this is a great web page and I enjoy reading the stories.
