Hi! My Name is Lisa Cox. i am 23 years old. I was 27 weeks prengant when I started to feel bad one day and running a temp. So I called my doctor he said for me to come in. He sent me to the hosp.to have an ultrasound done and then a stress test on the baby. I stayed there for about 3 1/2 Hours.
I was then told by the nurse that He said i should be sent to charleston Hospital (MUSC). Me and my husband got really scared. Because we knew something had to be wrong if we were being sent there. Thay told me nothing.
So We went home thinking all kinds of things. Finally the doctors office in charleston called the next day and set me up for a appointment on that next Monday at 10:00 am. So Me and My husband went to charleston that Monday Morning. We did not know what to expect.
We were told we were getting a level 2 ultrasound done. So we went in and the tech. called the docter in and she looked at the results and examed me.
Then she came back in and told me to get dressed and meet her in her office.
She explained to us that the baby was having heart problems and there was let that 1 inch of fluid around the baby.
She told me and my husband that we had 3 choices. We could deliver today and the baby would die, we could go home and the chances were the baby would die, or we could stay in the hospital for 7-10 days to be watched. So we chose to stay. We were so upset by the news 3 hours away from home no clothes, no family, and no money. This had to be a test I thought. So i called my mother to tell her, Myhusband got the week of with no pay and we took it day by day.
On that Saturday, we were told that the
fluid was decresing. They would take me in for another ultrasound on the next Monday to see if there were in change.
There were no change, so i asked to go home to rest and I would go see my doctor at home everyday. They did not want to but we went home. I went to my doctor at home that next morning to have and ultrasound and stress test done.
I thought Everthing was going to be fine. That Wensday i went to the hospital to have the stress test done.
My doctor did not like it at all. He told me and my mother the baby was not doing very well and I needed to get back to MUSC. So I went back By abulance.
I was there for a couple of hours and they did another ultrsound. They said it was just a waiting game now it all depended on the baby. They said it could be anyday now. So at 4:00 PM on that Friday I was sent to labor and delivery to be put on the monitors and be watched.
We called in all of the family. We all waited all night. The heart rate would drop every so often. At 6:00Am the next morning. They doctors said they were just going to watch me some more. I had no sleep i was so tired, They would not let me eat. Then The high risk doctor came in and said if there were no more heart rate drops in the next 3 hours then I could have somthing to eat and they would move me back to the other room. What Do you know My parents and sister leave to come back home to get some clothes and take care of somethings and I feel asleep. I was awaked by hte nurse saying I need to put a cather in. I said what is going on. You are going in to a Emergency C-Section. The heart rate drpped for 1 min. and would not come back up.
So I was taken to the or and I was put to sleep. The next thing i remeber was looking at my husband asking if it was aboy or girl. I had had a Little Girl,1lb. 3.4 0z. She was 11.5 in long.
she had not been growing and was small for her gestion age.I was 29 weeks that day she was born at 1:16pm. April 3rd,2004.
The doctors told me she came out crying.
She did not have to be put on a vent. just some c-pap so that she would not have to work so hard. I got to go see her for the 1st timethe next morning.
She was so tiny. My husbands wedding band size 10 went up to her shoulder.
She stayed in the NICU in MUSC for 1 month and then was transformed to McLeod in Florence, SC 1 hour away she stayed there for one month one week, and then she came to loris hospital for 1 week 2days. She came home on June 19, 2004.(her due date) She now weighs 3lb 12 oz. She is doing fine, not on any machines or anything. We think God for her everyday. She is asleep right now but will soon awake looking for mom and dad. I never thought i would go through somthing like this. It takes alot of courage and strengh.

I have been with preemie child for several years now, and was with preemie-l before that. My Stephen is now 8 and it is amazing to me to watch him swim and ride his bike and remember the early years. So much time in the hospital, so many dire predictions, such a high risk that we could lose him. Now I see a healthy active little boy who loves life and the world and thrives in spite of some limitations. I am thankful for both his success and for the struggles that taught me so much.

My twin sons were born on 4/1/04 at 31 4/7 weeks after my being hospitalized for 3 weeks with severe preclampsia (after 3 weeks of bedrest prior). At birth they were 2 lbs 11 oz & 3 lbs 2 oz. Right after the c-section they both were on cpap then vent for a few days, then cpap, then vent, then cpap and finally on cannulas right up until they were discharged. They fought severe PDA, barely skating by without surgery & a host of other complications. Every shift seemed like a different story. One shift I would hear they were drinking 12ccs and doing well and then 12 hours later we would find out they were seperated and back on IVs because they suddenly had distended bellies...maybe NEC??? But to find out 12 hours later they were ok. It was a rollercoaster ride to say they least. My sons came home @ 6 weeks and 7 weeks with colestatic jaundice & rickets. Today they are happy 12 weekers (unadjusted) who are hefty at 8lbs 4oz & 7lbs 5 oz. They still have a long road to ahead of them but I thank god for those wonderful doctors & nurses at the NICU, they can work miracles. It is so hard to be a mother to twin preemies and I don't think a fulltermer could ever understand. It is a blessing just seeing them thrive and grow.
Take care everyone:)
