I have two 29-weeker preemie boys (due to incompetent cervix). The oldest was 3 lb 3 oz and is now 6 years old and in grade 1. He spent a total of 7 weeks in hospital and has had no further complications. He does great in school but is small for his age (still just 36 lbs). The younger one was 3 lb 1 oz and spent 11 weeks in hospital (reflux kept him in longer). He is now 3.5 years old and wears glasses for near-sightedness but that may be more genetic than preemie. He has had a year of speech therapy but now talks more than we want somedays. He's still small too (26 lbs). Both boys have had almost miracle courses given how early they started their lives. While lots of preemies do have complications, I just thought I'd add a story of older preemies who have gone on to live relatively normal lives.

Our fourth son Louis was born at 27weeks weighing 2 pounds 2 oz and was in the NICU for almost 4 months. He has done great - we are very lucky. He has a lazy eye and wears glasses - at least as much as we can keep them on him! He did have some surgery for retinopathy on both eyes. He will be 2 in March. He is a joy to us - happy and running and climbing all over. To all the parents of preemies I pray every night for all of you since we have been through it ourselves - Trust in God and everything will work out.

I just wanted to say that I had a premature baby boy at 28 weeks. He was 3 lbs. and 4.8 ounces. He had to stay in the NICU for 2 weeks. He is now 6 weeks old and weighs about 6 lbs. I am so thankful for him.

Our son, Michael, was born on 1/22/90, at 28 weeks gestation, weighing 2 lbs, 10 ozs. He had his share of apnea spells in the NICU, and a few setbacks, but overall, we were very lucky and he came home to us 3/17/90. He is still small in stature for his age (now 11 and his 8-yr-old brother just surpassed him in height). However, Michael has a certain determination I believe all premies acquire in their "fight" for life. He forever makes us proud. He works hard to get good grades in school and this year joined his school's 5th grade basketball team after many years of fear of being ridiculed because of his size. He makes the baskets on run-ups, and is a great defenseman, but still has not managed during a game to get a basket. In the last game of this season, my husband was choked to tears at the kindness of humankind, when Michael was "cheered on" at his attempt to make a basket and everyone at that game wanted him to make it. He didn't, and the crowd sighed "Augh" in disappointment. I think Michael's determination shows to all. He doesn't give up and seems to win people over with his positive attitude. Someday, he will make that basket, but to his parents (and I'm crying as I'm writing this), he's already a winner.
