My daughter Ava was born June 5, 2008,she was due August 8th. I had her 1 day shy of 31 weeks gestation after battling preeclampsia and being on bedrest for over a month, and in the hospital for 2 weeks. She weighed in at 2lbs 10oz. She was on a vent for 3 days, then moved up to a c-pap for about a week. Now she is breathing on her own, room air. She had a PDA wich closed almost completely with the indocine. And she has 2 holes in her heart also. She is 4 weeks old today and weighs in at 3lbs 8oz. A parent never imagines themselves having to ask the nurse if she can hold her baby today, never imagines seeing her baby so little, so early, with so many wires and things hanging from her. I have never been scared to talk to a doctor until she was born, I'm terrified every time they come that something will be wrong. She is now starting to breast feed better and better each day, hopefully she will be taking all feeds by mouth here soon and not have to have the NG tube much longer.

At sixteen weeks, I had the greatest thrill and scare of my life. We learned that we were having twin boys and we learned my wife was having problems. Albert and his twin brother Don were born two month early at just a bit over 3 pounds each. If that was not enough to overcome, Albert had asthma so bad that his first three birthdays were spent in the critical care ward with his blood oxygen level dangerously low.

Today, the boys are 13, wearing size 10 ½ shoes, well on their way to being six feet tall, honor roll students and athletes. Don loves hunting and playing center on the school football team. Don snaps the ball to his brother Albert, who has found a love for all sports starting on the schools basketball, baseball, and football team. The following video documents Albert's first two years on the gridiron. Don is playing center wearing #51 but the camera does not stay on him. Linemen get no respect. Albert is quarterback and middle linebacker wearing #12. Who knows what the future will bring for the boys but they have truly been blessed.
I so well remember the fear, sadness and frustration of those days leading up to the boys’ birth but parents need to know to hang in there. Feel free to share this with new parents of a premature baby or babies in our case.

Today, I always give expecting parents one word advice for the next 18 to 22 years…….SAVOR (Every day, every moment).
Because your child is a precious gift and the years will fly by as a parent.
