I was told that my AFI level was low and that I had to deliver early, so they took my son almost 5 weeks early by C-section. I was told that PLENTY of babies are born at 36 weeks with no problems. That was not the case for my little man. He was taken to the NICU after birth, he had a Punemothorax, a torn lung & pereemie lungs. He was Halo flighted to another hospital at one day old. He had to be put on a ventalator. He is doing so good now! He is on a nasal canula and still has his NG tube. He is taking it one day at a time but getting better. I thank GOD that our baby boy is here and fighting. He is sooooo strong and I know that in God's time he will be home. I am looking for another mother to talk to.

My daughter Summer was born at 25 weeks and five days. I had been hospitalized for four days, my cerix was open. The doctor attempted to prevent premature delivery. It did not work. Shortly after I had my daughter one of the doctors from NICU calmly told me my daughter had a 50% chance of living. If she survived, the doctor went on to say, she would never develop like a normal child, she would never attend a regular school etc. Summer is now 27 days old. She has/had bilateral grade 3 bleed. Bleed not progressing. Head ultra sound to be done this week to see if bleeding being absorbed, and not progressing. Once bleed discovered doctor als informed me Summer would have cp. Summer recently had a PDA ligation. Original weight at birth 1 pound 8.6 oz. Went down to 1pound 6 oz. Currently at 1pound 14 oz. Taking it day by day. Thanking God for Summer and her older sister.

We've adopted 3 preemies (first meeting them at
29 days, 6 days, and 10 days respectively). The
first two were in the pound and half range (25
-27wk) and spent 99 / 90 days in NICU. The 3rd
was a huge 4 lb. 12 oz. (32-35wk?) They are now
9, 7, and 5 years and amazingly healthy
considering their starts (varying degrees of drug
exposure in utero).
Our daughter (oldest) had a trach tube for the 1st
3 years but was in the 85%tile (Ht & Wt)by age 3.
She is now 9 and wearing my shoes (yikes!), loving
reading, and hating math, typical 4th grade stuff.
Our 7 year old son (1 lb. 6 oz. 26 wk) is also
amazingly healthy (physically), bright (mentally),
but troubled (emotionally/psychologically). I am
currently investigating any possible links between
his current problems and his veteran "preemie"
status. Some labels that have been thrown around
are: Sensory Integration Disfunction (SID),
Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Asperger's
Syndrome, bipolar disorder, and last but not least
ADHD. I am currently on the trail of PTSD (post-
traumatic stress disorder) in veteran preemies. It is
basically "un" studied from what I can find. Any
communication from parents seeing similar
behaviors in their "veterans" would be helpful.
Caleb was on the vent for 6 wks. so had lots of heal
sticks etc. and now seems to fit criteria for a child
"traumatized prior to age 4" according to (non-
preemie related) child trauma research. Any
contributions on this topic would be much
appreciated.
For those of you who are just now entering the
Parents of Preemies Cub please don’t be alarmed by
my post. Just remember to give your babies lots of
positive touch. I was only able to hold Caleb 30
min. a day during his NICU stay. Apparently that
wasn’t enough. Infant massage websites couldd be
helpful.
Our youngest is a joy. Some language delays but
he’ s ready to read!!
God’s best to those of you walking through the
NICU thing now. It may seem like it’s unending but
in 9 years time you’ll be where I am looking back
wondering where the time went.
