I'm a Dad to three, and a step-dad to two, including a wonderful 23 week preemie. My wife went through everything and then some of what you've all listed here. Grant was not supposed to make it through the night according to the Doctors. Then a few days, then a week. Brain bleeds, torn skin, eyesight problems, balance, devlopmental and cognitive issues. Grant just turned 14 ! As his stepdad, I became involved when he was just 3 years old, and have been with him every step of the way. My words of advice to those who may need it, are that he brings us joy and laughter every day. yes, the challenges and hurdles are there as well, but he has brought such joy to our extended family, and it helps us see past these obstacles. take time to teach, too listen, to laugh and share. take each day as it comes. A simple hug and an I Love you that I get are priceless. Grant's situation inspired my wife and I to create a series of DVDs for young children that help them with simple reading, colors, counting, shapes, colors, sounds, and lots of great songs and imagery of other children. We produced the DVDs, called "Lots To Learn" (LotsToLearn.com) because we loved teaching Grant, and enjoyed the good old fashioned method of entertaining and teaching at the same time. Grant does his best every day, and loves the puppet "Buster" within the videos. Grant smiles and laughs regularly, and loves speaking with everyone who walks by the house. We all have an angel or two or more. Our angels have come in smaller packages! I am the proud mother of 3 preemies. Two came 6 weeks early and one came 5 weeks early. To those of you beginning the journey with a little one. Keep your head up. Know that this is not something that you did wrong!!!! The first year is more difficult. Keeping to yourself more, RSV fears, and fears of anything elde that can make the baby sick. But you will get through it , with support from friends and family. Eac hyear after gets better, the baby grows until you are the only one that knows that they came early. My angels are now 6, 3, and 10 months. I know that mine are only mildly preemie, especially compared to some. BUt I know how I felt going into the NICU, and the looks athat others gave me as I took this tiny little bundle out to stores, and shopping for clothes, when even the preemmie clothes were huge. So now look at the great things, how you felt when he or she ate 8 oz. in one feeding, the excitement you felt as the went to size 1 diapers, the joy of 0 to 3 month clothes. The best is yet to come. Take it from one mom to another! keep up the great work the weight and strength will come!

I'm 24 yrs old and this was my 1st child. when i found out i was going to have a baby my mind was like no not me but it was me. I went to go see my doctor on monday feb 19 2007 for a check up and thats when he told me that i was already 5 centimeters dilated. I was scared i wasnt ready for my baby to come. My baby is not suppose to be here for another 3 months. So i went stright to labor and delivery area where they gave me all the iv's and was watching my baby. They gave me a ultrasound thats when i found out i was a girl! When all that was over i started to have contractions on my right side really bad but my doc could pick them up. I felt like she was comming so i pushed twice and she came. She was still in her sack and breathing on her own. We gave her the name angel because she is blessed to be here. She was born at 7:09 pm and weight 1lp 9.3 oz and 13 inches. She is doing very good because she is a child of god.
