My daughter, Joshlyn, was born at 25 weeks weighing 1 lb, 6 oz and 12.5 inches. She came home on her original due date, Feb 2, 2005 weighing 5 lbs and 2 oz after spending 101 days in the NICU. She is now a healthy and bouncing 22 mos old. She had ROP surgery in both eyes and had bouts with infections while she was in the NICU. Yes, we do understand what all parents of a premature child go through. We understand the roller coaster ride but hang in there. God will pull you through it. We pray for all NICU babies and parents. I suggest that all new parents of premature babies to contact the other parents who been through the same thing. I know you'll feel better after talking to others who went through the same thing. My mother told me the other day that only those who are going through it or been through it will ever understand. She's right. God bless.... Julie

My daughter, Sarina will be 15 next week. I always have mixed emotions as her birthday approaches. While it is a special day, it is also a reminder of the stressful experience of the NICU.
Mostly, though. I am incredibly thankful. I do not know why Sarina had such a good outcome, when so many other babies did not. But, as her birthday draws near, I pause to think about our experience and to give thanks.
Sarina was born in 1991, at 25 weeks gestation, weighing 1 pound and 8 ounces. We were given the grim statistics that she had a 50/50 chance of survival and that if she survived, she would have a handicapping condition. Her course in the NICU was better than many babies. Although she was on the ventilator for 2 months, she had no scarring in her lungs. Her eyes are fine, she had PDA which closed on its own. She did have a small, grade I IVH, but it resolved on its own. Other than a pneumonia scare when she was 3 days old, things went pretty well, and Sarina came home on her original due date, after 100 days in the hospital.
Sarina will be a sophomore in high school this fall. She is a very bright girl and has always been on the honor roll in school. She is taking honors and advanced classes and absolutely loves science. She wants to go to college for biomedical research! Physically, she is "normal", whatever that means. She is a little clumsy and awkward, but nothing too noticeable. Her penmanship is hard to read, and fine motor things were hard when she was little, but again, this is not a major problem. She wears contacts for slight nearsightedness, but the eye doctor said that this is not related to her prematurity. Sarina was thrilled to get to 5 feet, 2 inches this year! On the short side of normal, but still great! She was always VERY small as a little kid (10th percentile). She weighs only 80 pounds, and looks VERY thin. Her appetite is huge, and she eats very healthy, so I'm not worried.
Hug your preemies today!!! Good outcomes do happen. 15 years ago, I was terrified of the future, and things turned out so much better than I ever could have hoped!
