I remember when my first child learned how to paddle to a canoe. It was very exciting for him. I was very concerned about his safety. I insisted he wear an inflatable life jacket. He would always tell me he did not need this safety equipment. He thought he was invincible. I was teaching him how to ride a bicycle. I demanded that he wear protective gear on his head in order to prevent an injury. He could not accept the possibility that the bicycle could flip over and he could damage his head. The protective helmet would protect him. He would always fuss about wearing a helmet on his head and he would tell me it was uncomfortable and he did not need this equipment and I was over-reacting. Then one day we were in the playground and he was riding his bike. He was going really fast and we had argued about the helmet and safety gear. he said he did not need it. That day he was reminded about why it is important. The bike ran into a big rock and my child could not control the bicycle (bike) he fell forward onto his forehead. I could not run fast enough to protect him from crashing into the pavement. His forehead was bruised and he did suffer from the injury. Had he worn his helmet his head would have been protected from the injury. From that point forward he always aknowledged my advice especially in regards to accident prevention, safety and emergency equipment. It was as if he forgot that I was older than him and had more life experience and I learned from my mistakes. I always try to pass on my knowledge and life experiences to my children. I do not want them to make the same mistakes I did when I was growing up, or suffer from preventable injuries.

It took us 7 years to get pregnant, and when we found out we were not only FINALLY pregnant, but with triplets - we were overwhelmed with excitement! I miscarried one of them at seven weeks. The other two were doing fine. I started having major contractions at 25 weeks and went into the hospital. I was given steroids for the girls. On complete bed rest, I lasted another 2 weeks. I somehow contracted klebsiela infection while in the hospital, and my water broke April 4 (due date July 1). My twin daughters were born via emergency c-section at 27 weeks weighing 2 lb 2oz & 2ob 6 oz. They were on hifi vent, both had grade II IVH & PDA's, and klebsiela as well. We were all very sick. Savannah had a massive pulmonary hemmorage on day 2. We almost lost her. Her IVH cleared up, but her PDA did not close with meds. Gianna's IVH caused hydrocefulous, and she had to have a VAD put in her head, then a shunt when she reached 4 lbs. Her PDA closed with meds. They are now 13 mos old. Gianna has had to have 2 shunt revisions, but she is a little trooper. Savannah is going to have her PDA closed next month. They are both doing excellent - true miracles- after 75 days in the NICU. They are such blessings and inspirations! Praise God!

My daugher, Alexis Pearl, was born on May 11, 2005 at 30 weeks weighing 3 pounds 10 ounces. She was 16 1/2 inches long. She spent her first 5 days on a ventilator and ended up spending 26 days in NICU. I did not get to hold by beautiful baby girl until she was 1 week old. She was strong from day 1 and overcame every obstacle that was thrown her way. Alexis was on a apnea monitor until she was 5 months old. She is my amazing little miracle and I cannot believe that we will be celebrating her first birthday this year on May 11. You would never know that she had such a rough start because she smiles and laughs all the time. She is the center of my world.
