My son, Shelby Drew, was born at 26 weeks and 5 days gestation on November 5, 2002. He weighed 2 pounds, 2 ounces, and 7 grams, and was 14 and a half inches long. Within a week of birth he had dropped down to about a pound and a half, was on a ventilator, oxygen, and suffered from bradycardia episodes of anywhere from 10 (on a GOOD day, to more than 15 to 20 in a day. At about two weeks old his lower bowel perforated due to the negligence of a nurse who did not normally work in a NICU. The perforated bowel required emergency surgery, however he had perforated HOURS before they found it, the first shift nurse was finally the one to catch it when she came into work. The NICU was quickly locked down and surgery was performed right there, he was given a colostomy bag for 7 weeks and his bowels were given the time they needed to develop further. After 7 weeks with the colostomy his second surgery went much better than the first. His bowels work well now fortunately, but it does require some caution as he grows, i notice very quickly if he doesnt poop like normal and apple juice ( even dilluted) is a major no no for him. Long term his biggest problem will be the BPD from two months of ventilators. He is now a healthy and happy two year old who loves his PawPaw and Nana, and loves visiting the farm to play on tractors. I feel very fortunate and enjoy each day as though it could be our last together, each day really is a gift of god for us. I was also a preemie, born 6 weeks early in 1981 and weighed 4 pounds 5 ounces, 18 inches long. I had an older brother also born at 27 weeks in 1978, he only survived for 3 days, however i know that he really is up there looking out for both his baby sisters and his little kindred spirit nephew. we are all fighters in the long run, from the day a preemie is born we have fought to live, and in the long run, living life as a precious gift is exactly how we have survived.

I had 2 premature babies. Tyairra was 1lb11oz@ 28 weeks in 1995 and DeVante was 3lb9oz @ 33 weeks in 1996. Tyairra is now 9 going on 10 in May and she is in the Gifted and Talented program at her school and DeVante is very active in sports and in an average student in school. Neither of the children had any problems due to their births. Tyairra stayed in the hospital for 2 1/2 months and came home at 4lb8oz and Devante stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks and came home at 4lb4oz. I'm so glad this site is here.

Jan. 28, 2002 I had a 1 lb. 10 oz baby girl named Riley at 31 weeks gestation. I had her via c-section due to her being breech and some other stress related issues (my preeclampsia with HELLP syndrome and other health issues of mine). She was in NICU for 1 1/2 months, without any complication except for a few blood transfusions. She came home on my 26th birthday at exactly 4 lbs. She is now 3 years old and big for her age (39 inches and 38 lbs)and does well in school and dance classes and socially and everything else. No signs of any of the typical preemie problems that arrise. She really is a miracle and we are so blessed.

So happy to find your site. We have a 5 year old son who was born at 23 weeks. We have kept him out of kindergarten and will send him next year. He is currently in Early Childhood and having difficulties. Sensory issues are arising which have led me to discover that he may be on the "low' end of autism as well. Thanks for your info. Karen

I think it's great that there's a site for preemie parents and such. I was born 3 month's premature, 2lbs at birth. I'm now 13, and leading a perfectly normal life. I sing, and dance, and act, and play sports.
i just want everyone to know that even though a baby is born premature, it doesn't last forever.
