Thanks for this. I love animals. Have many cats and dogs and have been looking for more info on the Orthodox Church's view on Animals. It just seems so obvious to me. Animals live in the most natural state without sin. God spared them of this. The animals will forgo judgement. Humans are the ones with free will. We make choices... we face the ultimate task and judgement.

My companion of 18 years Lois Lane has passed away this morning. I am looking for an orthodox prayer for animals I might read tomorrow morning when our family buries Lois. Please assist. Thank you.

I loved reading your article about animals. I to am an Orthodox Christian and a huge animal lover and do alot of volunteering in the animal rights movement. I lost my yellow lab Beau 6 years ago and everyone who knew him said he was a very special dog. And he was! I cry still over him, but I know that he is with God now. Since then My family and I have adopted to labs, one black and the other brown. Salty and Sarah. I call them my Guardian Angels because they follow me everywhere I go. May God bless and keep safe all his beautiful creatures always. Thanks for the article

It is sad that often people who may be smart in some ways would be dumb in others, like the Catholic priest who told you about animals and souls. How would he know who and what creature has a soul or not? He's never watched a dog sleep. Sometimes there's a jerk or a twitch... ah, there's a dream in action and that might indicate there's more there than one would think.
Nice guestbook, some great comments.
I'm glad to be at the top of the food chain (on this planet at least) and am thankful to be able to practice that opportunity. God Bless
