I still remember the summers I spent in Bakersville. I miss it so much. I always told myself that one day I will find my way back to Bakersville and have a family there one day. I hope it works out. I miss my family very much. My grandparents are Millard and Romaine Gouge. God bless them both for all the love they have shown me and inspired me to be the person I am today. I still have much growing up to do but I beleive all my strenght and kindness comes from the Gouge family. I will never forget the town of Bakersville and all the friendly people. Thanks for the beautiful and fun summers!

Bakersville is a quiet little town. The stores are much to far away & u need to have a large grocery store in Bakersville. The speed limit on the Hwy. 227 ? needs to be lowered. Your judicial system for partial custody for mothers that have been in jail several times, and has been definetely termed as retarded & child negelect & u still make those children go to their mothers home even when they dont want to go. Your social service department needs to be updated, in Maryland this woman (M. Bishop) would never, never be allowed to have these children one minutue without supervised visits & NO custody. As far as Bakersville itself its very nice & quiet but for judicially nope.. this is neglect for the child..

Love the website! I've traced my roots to David Baker and would love to converse with other Baker's or McKinney's. I plan to visit Bakersville in the near future, it sounds beautiful. Would like to have more history on the Baker or McKinney Families. Any cousins still there?

Bakersville will always have a special place in my heart because I grew up there with my brothers and sister (Johnny, Ralph, Thomas, Fred and Eleanor
Fry) and graduated from Bowman High School in 1964. My Mom is Goldie Sue Fry and she is currently in a nursing home in Ridgecrest. I just wanted to extend my sympathy to the town of Bakersville and all of the families of
the recent fire at the jail in Bakersville. We heard on the national news today that eight inmates died and several people were injured. This brought back many memories of when I was around ten years old and the jail was being built. My sister and I were
friends with the jailers two daughters,
Pauline and Janette Howell. The jailer was Zeke Howell. At that time the jailer and his family lived in the residence part of the new jail. My sister and I played with Pauline and Janette all over that new jail. At that time in the 50s there was hardly more than one inmate in the jail at a time and he was usually just sleeping off a drunk or something minor. Many of you will recall that the jailer was
cleaning his gun and it accidently fired, injuring his wife and killing his
infant son. After that, we didn't hear any more from Pauline and Janette, but we will always remember the fun we had playing around that jail which was
considered very modern at the time. Our hearts go out to everyone involved in the tragedy. Again, Bakersville has
many precious memories for my family and we will always hold you in high regard.

Hello everyone. I am looking for people who knew David Keith Stamey, who was football coach at Tuscola High School in Waynesville, and who very sadly died last July the 26th from cancer. He was buried at Bakersville Bear Creek Baptist Church...If you knew David, i would like to correspond with you. He was a great friend, who will be deeply missed. Thanks, and God bless.
