My mother, Lizzie, was the daughter of Sam and Martha Garland Whitson and my dad, John, was the son of Henry and Phoebe Mosley Hill, both families from Beans Creek. I have visited Mitchell County many times and would like to hear from any relatives or others that knew either or both of these families.

Hello, I grew up in the Greene Cove Holler many years ago. So now when I get homesick for the mountains, I get on this website so that I can look at the wonderful pictures. Thanks a lot. George Lakes

The Baker Store ledger has finally been copied and is available from Irene Sparks, the Mitchell County Historian at Bakersville, NC. The ledger covers the years from 1832-1878, is fairly good size, and has many family names from the area and the items they bought or traded. It certainly is a look into the lifestyle of the region. She will send you a copy if you make a donation to the Mitchell County Historical Society. They really need the support as the cost of keeping the Baker Old Town Cemetery cleared is expensive. They keep uncovering more stones and markers. There were some graders nearby 3 years ago when I was there with some development going on and they want to preserve the cemetery. Each year lots of Bakers and other ancestors gather on the 3rd Sunday of September for a cleanup ceremony to keep the path open to it. It’s difficult to get to as you have to go up a hill on a small dirt driveway which turns to mud in the rain. Most of the relatives who traverse it are elderly. It's not just Bakers, there are many other family lines from the area buried there. Additionally they need help with preserving all the historical documents and artifacts from the region. If you have never seen Bakersville, it is a beautiful little town in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the county seat of Mitchell County. www.Bakersville.com The small library there also has a lot of research information. If you wish to make a donation and receive a copy of the Baker Store Ledger please send it to: Mitchell County Historical Society, P O Box 651, Bakersville, NC 28705. I would suggest a minimum donation of $100. The historical society is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9-3 and Irene Sparks can be reached at 828-688-4371. Please help to support this Historical Society.
