My wife and I had the pleasure and privilege of enjoying a lovely afternoon at the Creek Walk recently. As always, of course, I could not resist the temptation to match wits with the rainbow, brown and brook trout that swim in Cane Creek. I actually did pretty well, and, for the fish that were hooked, most of them were able to released back into the stream to be able to swim for another day, at least! The Creek Walk is such a beautiful and complementary addition to Bakersville, and I can understand why there are plans to expand the Walk to three times its current size. In my opinion, this addition cannot be completed soon enough! Drives through Bakersville have a very distinctive and pronounced romantic component to them, and particularly so for someone like me who finds himself constantly engaged in the 24-7 hustle and bustle of big city life. Driving along Highway 226 North just prior to entering the town limits and being blessed with such a fantastic view of majestic Roan Mountain always sets my imagination in motion, and I think it is one of the great inspirational views, along with places like Crater Lake, located in Oregon, to be found anywhere in the United States. Beyond the romanticism, I am also moved to think of the core values that have helped shape Bakersville through the course of so many years, and, in this day and age of advanced technology, I find myself greatly admiring the strong, yet, simple, values aligned with the many reminders of subsistence farming that continue to dot the landscape in Mitchell County. Despite the fact that many of the people who lived in the Bakersville area in days gone by may not have possessed a lot of formal education, nonetheless, in my opinion, many of these people possessed the educational equivalent of a PhD(earned with high honors), as was mentioned in this web site in the section on "Doanie Mama." In fact, a convincing argument could be made that many such people possessed levels of common sense, depth, kindness, vigor, awareness, inquisitiveness, toughmindedness, sensitivity and ability to think "outside of the box" and successfully work through crises, not to mention breadth of life experiences(day to day), that even many of the most brazen and most highly educated individuals(in a formal sense) out there would have a difficult time not admiring and respecting. While I have been blessed with what could perhaps be considered a pretty good formal education, some of the greatest lessons I learned in life came from my grandparents, who happened to be subsistence farmers who often stuggled to make ends meet but who successfully managed to make the most of life each day and live life to the fullest. It is very nice to be able to visit this web site on occasion, and, may your good work on this site continue in the future, as I am sure it will.
