Descendants of Mordecai Harper Generation No. 1 1. MORDECAI2 HARPER (JAMES1) was born 1783 in Pennsylvania, and died 1857 in Ohio. He married MARGARET JACKSON Abt. 1801 in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. She was born 1785 in Pennsylvania, and died 1861 in Malaga, Monroe Co., Ohio. Notes for MORDECAI HARPER: Naomie said it was left by a lady who died in 1947, that Mordecai is buried in the Old Lightner Cemetary in Morgan Co., Ohio in an unmarked grave. ( Not proved) First heard of Mordecai Harper and his children from Naomie McCully from Canton, Ohio Chuck Zonker has Mordecai born in: Brien, Pennsylvania. Gideon Harper, second to the oldest son of Mordecai and Margaret (Jackson) Harper was born in Pennsylvania near Fayette County on April 1, 1808. (The Harper family was listed in Pa.) In 1810, As a young boy he lived in the Rostraver Township area of Westmoreland County Pennsylvania with his parent's, Than several year's later the family moved west into Cadiz, Ohio. Before 1820 around 1818 the family moved to Belmont County, Ohio.) After several more year's the Harper family moved to the Somerset Township area of Belmont County, Ohio where they remained. Then in 1820 they were living in Cadiz, Ohio. Sometime around 1828 Gideon Harper married Rhoda. Rhoda, Gideon's first wife died December 29, 1851. She died in the Meigs Township, Morgan County, Ohio area. Before 1850 Gideon and Rhoda moved to Penn Township area in Morgan County. During Gideon's marriage to Lydia he lived in the Windor Township area and the Manchester Township area of Morgan County, Ohio. Drew Harper, Dana Harper's son said he heard Mordecai Harper had a strong Scottish accent. I guess it depends on who said it to determine if it is creditable. Notes for MARGARET JACKSON: First heard of Margaret Jackson and her children from Naomie McCully from Canton, Ohio. buried in the Bush Cemetary in Monroe Co., Ohio in an unmarked grave. Notes for MARY HARPER: Bruce, This is the grave of Mary Wilson, daughter of Mordecai and Margaret (Jackson) Harper. It is in the Wilson Cemetery on Deersville Road a few miles west of Cadiz, Ohio. I took the picture on December 30, 1988. There are only three graves there - Mary and her husband's parents, Thomas and Levinah Wilson. It is at the top of what the locals call Mummy Hill. The Harrison County cemetery directory lists it incorrectly as in the NW quarter of the county, while being on the south side of Deersville Road puts it in the SW quadrant. I had four hundred miles of driving involved in finding this stone and taking this photograph, two trips from home. Mary was my gr gr gr grandmother. MARY, Wife of THOMAS WILSON, DIED Jan. 1, 1845, Aged 41 Yr. 4(?) mo. 8 da. I have a picture of her husband, Thomas Wilson (II), which I want to rescan later. Born Sept. 10, 1873, most of her early life was spent on the present Hugh Crisman farm. Oct. 29, 1892, she was united in marriage Oscar C. Hammond, a descendant of two of the pioneer families of Meigsville. She and her husband and family resided in Meigsville until 1923, when they moved to Mansfield where Thos. Jenkins, a relative of Mrs. Hammond, was employed as superintendent of the Mansfield Reformatory. Mr. Hammond was employed at the Reformatory until 1938 when they returned to McConnelsville and purchased the former Abram Farris residence in the east end of the village. This residence has since been the family home. There survive a son, Fred D. Hammond of Meigsville, two grandchildren, Robert A. Hammond, county deputy grange master, and Mrs. Albert Mason (Janice Hammond) of Columbus; and one great-grandchild, beside the sister, Mrs. Devitt, noted. In former years, Mrs. Hammond belonged to the Salem church and after moving to McConnelsville, she and her husband transferred to Grace Methodist church. A regular attendant at the Grace church, nothing gave her greater pleasure than being present at both church and Sunday school. Mrs. Hammond was a kindly, friendly woman, a good wife and neighbor and enjoyed the friendship of all who knew her. Funeral services, largely attended, were held Saturday afternoon at the Miller Funeral home in charge of Rev. Chas. Dailey. Pall bearers were Roy Lawlor, John Thomas, John Leonard, Chester Harrop, Roy Harper and Glen Drake, the body being laid to rest in the McConnelsville cemetery. Originally published Saturday, March 22, 2003 More About CECIL HARPER and VIVIAN ANGELL: Marriage: Greenup, Kentucky Notes for ELIZABETH LOUISE KELLY: Emma E. SHRIDER and William F. KELLY had Elizibeth Louise KELLY (Nov. 21, 1920 4 P.M.) when Emma was 34 and William F. was 40 years old. They lived at Ridge Rd Rt 2. , Zanesville, Muskingum Co., Ohio 1140 Lakeview & Fifth St., Buckeye Lake, OH. sold: April 2, 1976 When I first got to the Mt Carmel East hospital to see mom, when she was having a Gallbladder operation, Tim met me on her floor and said something to me about mom's condition, I guess I didn't understand what he was saying because it had something to do with mom may not make it. A nurse that worked there said something to the same effect. I had seen the nurse before in Hebron so I thought she was just being sociable, later I found out she was related to Brande Roberts (Katelyn's mom). I thought mom was just really uncomfortable because the last couple days she said she didn't want company, she just needed to rest. Her diaphragm was pressing against her lung on one side and making it had to breath. It was like someone was sitting on her chest. I kept telling her to relax. They was taking her down to the x-ray room so I helped wheel her down. They left her outside the x-ray room to go in and get things ready for her, in the mean time I was talking to her and she said it was like someone was pinching her oxygen hose so I checked it and had a nurse check it also to see if it was working right, they said it was. She said she couldn't hardly breath. I helped them push into the x-ray room and then they asked me to go out while they x-rayed her. After about 5 or 10 minutes I heard them calling out her name; Elizabeth, Elizabeth, then they said shes not responding and said to someone else, call her doctor. I was talking to her on the way back up to her room telling her to try to breath a little harder but what I didn't realize was she had died in the x-ray room. When we got to her room Tim and his son Mike was not there yet, they had gone somewhere to pick up the van that was being worked on in Newark, OH. When he got there shortly after we got to mom's room they said she had a living will that said do not resuscitate and ask if we wanted them to try. They said she had a lung disease that would keep getting worse until she died eventually. I know if they brought her back by some chance and later she suffered, she was always afraid of that and it would kill me to see that, so we said let her die in peace. When Barry my brother and I where real young we went in the hay mound, grandma Harper told us not to play in it. Barry jumped from one hay bail to another and cut his head real bad. When we went in to eat Bobby grabbed Barry's hat and look at his head and asked what happened, can't remember the rest of the story. Bobby had moved to Buckeye Lake when Barry and I were young and lived on Union St. and Lake St. I remember he sold insurance. We used to go visit him all the time after school. One day we left the door open on the corn crib and the pony ate a lot of corn and died. I remember dad plowing the field with horses pulling a disc and Barry fell off the back of the disc and the disc ran over him, the disc hit a rock and jumped over his head, he was alright. I also remember dad whipping me with a willow switch and mom through a hoe at him, it was the only time I can ever remember dad whipping me. I pushed Barry into a ditch. I remember mom and dad taking me to a ball softball game in White Cottage, dad was the manager and they left for a while and I didn't know where they went and I thought they left me, when they came back I was standing on the sidewalk crying. 615 Spangler Dr., Zanesville, Ohio 1-1953 to 2-1954 ( 7y 5m ) Fox Trailer Court, Frazesburg Rd. Zanesville, Ohio 2-1954 to 3-19-56 ( 9y 6m ) I have a mothers day card I made for mom that is from Dillon school, third grade ( Mar. 13, 1956 ) When we first came to Buckeye Lake they were putting in the Cloverleaf on Rt. 70 and we lived behind the Beachridge Hotel in a trailer, so we had to move to Hunts Landing in the trailer park. Hunts Landing, Buckeye Lake, Ohio 3-1956 to 3-1957 (10y 6m ) I remember Barry and I walking from Hunt's to Bounds 5th. St. where Bob was looking at a house that him and mom was going to buy. 1140 Lakeview, Buckeye Lake, Ohio 3-1957 to 12-1966 (19y 6m ) Shortly before I went into the Army I lived on the North Bank at Buckeye Lake under a house there, it looked more like a storage room converted into an apartment. It had a kitchen with little table, bed and bathroom in what looked like a little hallway. I left home because my stepfather keep beating us kids around. I worked at IGA and Straight & Lamp in Hebron, Ohio, right before I went into the Army. I signed up to join the Navy with my brother and when we had to go to Fort Hayes induction center I chickened out, they called my name and Barry said I changed my mind, They said they'd get me and a while later I was drafted into the Army for two years. I went to Fort Knox for two weeks then they took us to Fort Hood, Texas for basic training because of the spinal meningitis being so bad at Fort Knox. I came home for two weeks leave from basic got married to Judy Watson ( she was only 16, to young to get married) and went back to A.I.T. in Texas than went on a ship for 9 days to Germany. I remembered someone told me about how they would get you to volunteer for something that sounded like fun and then give you hard duty. When I was at Fort Knox for zero week I talked a friend into hiding under the barracks till they were all done passing out duty and on the ship which was the last troup ship to Germany, (after that the only went by plain) I did the same thing. All I did for the 9 day trip was sleep, eat and watch movies. In the mornings we had to go up on top deck so the other guys could clean up our rooms. After I got to Bremmerhaffon, Germany and was assigned a base unit witch was Ansbach, Germany I had no place to hide because they assigned us duty by a roster. When I was in basic training we had to crawl under machine gun fire and barbed wire in cinders, I remember it hurt so bad I got up on my hands and tip toes so I wouldn't have to be on my knees and elbows even if I was going to get shoot. I joined a cult headed by Mahreshi Maesh Yogi that said if you chant certain vedic chants you will come in contact with gods or higher beings from other worlds or other planets and eventually become one with god. A friend of mine (Don Nobilucci) said it was wrong and went against God's teachings. He got some scriptures from his dad which was a Methodist minister to prove his point. Then he came to me one day and said he was ordering a bible and wanted to know if I wanted him to order one for me. I said no at first, then I said go ahead and Order me one, I was going to prove him wrong with the bible he got me. I read both sides for hours day after day. I used to go home day after day crying, begging God to show me the truth. One day I was walking down the isle at Western Electric and it was like someone reach into my head and threw out all the garbage and what was left was: God sent his son in the flesh to die and shed his blood for our sins. A free gift just for the asking. June 30,2001 Retired Lucent Tech. Rickenbacker warehouse, fork truck driver. Dad went with me to the Masonic one day class to become a Master Mason in Cambridge, OH. I became a member of the Irville Masonic Lodge 184. He was my Mentor for that day. When we came back to his house he gave me his first Masonic ring. I know it meant a lot to dad for me to become a member. Divorced from Monica Harper: Oct. 29, 1975 - July 23, 1976 Case No. 75B-63170 The Advocate ( Newark, Ohio ) Licking County Sheriff Deputy Barry Harper arresting .22 caliber killer that had Licking County residents Arnold and afraid to come out of there homes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cruiser crash claims deputy. Nov. 8, 1983 Licking County Sheriff's Deputy Barry Harper died just before 5 a.m. today at Columbus Grant Hospital from extensive multiple injuries sustained when his cruiser overturned on Croton Road, 4 ˝ miles north of Johnstown. Officials say Harper was trapped inside the overturned patrol car for about 2 hours this morning before rescue workers could cut him free from the wreckage. According to Licking County Sheriff Gerry Billy, Harper was northbound on Croton Road on routine patrol at approximately 1:30 a.m., when he drove off the left edge of the road on a curve and hit a telephone pole. The impact snapped the pole in two, Billy said. Harper was not on a call or pursuing anyone at the time of the collision, Billy said, No signs of excessive speed were evident at the scene, Billy said. Officials cannot pinpoint the exact time of the accident, because the department's dispatcher had lost radio contact with Harper this morning. At presstime today, Grandville post troopers remained at the scene, directing towing operations, to return the wrecked sheriff's cruiser to Newark. Lifeflight, the emergency medical evacuation helicopter, arrived on the scene at 2:31 a.m., Billy said, 20 minutes after notification of the accident. Croton firefighters were the first to respond to the accident. Several forces joined in the rescue efforts. MC CULLY 11 September 1976 in Canton, Stark Co., Ohio, son of THOMAS MC CULLY and ELLA LEWIS. He was born 11 December 1950 in N. Canton, Stark Co., Ohio. Notes for NAOMI MAY BAILEY: McCULLY, Naomie...........1-216-454-7172 207 Girard Ave Ne Canton, OH 44704 Naomie credits earlier Harper family researchers such as Effie Jane Morgridge born in 1868. She was the granddaughter of Fenton Mercer Carter. Effie's book was on the Carter family but included the information on all of Mordecai Harper's family. ************************************************************************************************ Her other sources included Edgar Harper, born 1893 and an Arthur Harper. ************************************************************************************************ Naomi has visited cemeteries, court houses and health departments in Monroe, Belmont, Noble, Guernsey, Morgan and Muskingum Counties as starters, just focusing on the Harper family as well as investigating articles throughout PA. She has concluded that there were two separate James Harper lines in the Westmoreland Co. area. The line (not associated with Mordecai) that is mentioned in the Fayette Co., PA history book was from London, England and came to the U.S. in 1773 and had traveled to Westmoreland Co. by 1784. The James Harper, she believes to be our line, was already in Tyrone Township, Westmoreland Co. by 1773. The James Harper, she believes to be ours, was Scotch -Irish from Tyrone Co., Ireland and settled in Tyrone Twp., Fayette Co., PA; which in 1773 was Franklin Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. There he organized the Tyrone Presbyterian Church which dates back to 1776. According to Naomi she believes that this was Mordecai Harper, Sr's grandfather, James Harper, Sr. One of James Harper Sr.'s sons was James Harper, Jr. James Harper, Jr. was married to Sarah Woodruff, daughter of Cornelius Woodruff. According to Cornelius' Will the Woodruff Family came from New Jersey. Naomi believes that our James Harper, Sr's Father was descended from one of two family members; James and Jennett Lewis Harper who settled in the Connecticut Valley and was once part of the upper PA area; or a Henry Harper from the Philadelphia, PA and NJ area. Both of these possibilities have a common ancestor of Arthur Harper of (Curcubry or Curoudbright or Kirkoudbright) Scotland. He was also a proprietor in the townland of Cotveneagh of Killead Co., Antrim Co., Ireland in 1604. Several of Arthur's children traveled to NJ and PA areas. Dear Ms. Johnson, I am a descendant of William Harper and Frances Wyatt of Surry-Sussex county Virginia. I believe William was a descendant of Patrick Harper of Ireland. I am having difficulty documenting that Frances Wyatt was the daughter of James Wyatt and Grace Newton. Also, I am searching for solid documentation that William Harper and Jane Bonner were the parents of William Turner Harper who died in Perry County, Alabama. If you can help me, please e-mail me. I will give you more information at that time. Thank you. Marsha Harper
